Plinths, the heavy platforms that hold up statues and monuments, are by their very definition not made for all.

Instead of holding only a few privileged figures and particular histories, Plinths for the People are large stages activated by community members to ensure that all stories, voices and visions are acknowledged.

This collaborative work remakes the historical plinth and grants under/untold histories real space on the cityscape. Community members speak their truth, perform their triumphs, and become their own kind of hero.

Above: This project was first activated as part of the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial: The Available City, Plinths for the People was supported by 062 Gallery and a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
