A grid of Dodging Tools on view as part of nice white ladies at The Luminary.

Dodging tools are used in the darkroom to selectively alter the amount of light striking photographic paper while it is exposed. Because they are handmade and often quickly discarded, they are usually cobbled together with found cardboard and wire. If used “properly” while making a print, they are kept in motion and therefore, their actual shape and size remains unseen.

My large-scale “dodging tools” for contested public monuments were created from large sheets of cardboard and 2-inch dowel rods and performed at 30 US historical monuments between 2014 and 2020.
